What the Annual Election Period Means for You

The Annual Election Period (AEP) is just around the corner! It starts on October 15 and runs through December 7 each year. But what does this mean for you and your Medicare plan?

Changes Could Be Coming to Your Plan

Every year, many Medicare plans undergo changes, and it’s important to know if those changes affect your current coverage. Have you taken a moment to review your plan for the upcoming year?

Your benefits, premiums, co-pays, and even the medications covered (prescription drug formulary) may be different next year. That’s why reviewing your plan now can save you from unexpected surprises later.

Review Your Plan’s Coverage

Before deciding to stick with your current plan, it’s essential to check for any significant updates. Here are some common changes that could affect you:

  • Prescription drug coverage: Your plan’s formulary (the list of covered medications) might have changed.
  • Costs: Premiums, deductibles, and co-pays could be different.
  • Doctor networks: Your plan might update its provider network. Make sure your primary care physician and specialists will still accept your plan.

Tip: Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) may not include information about whether your doctor is still in-network. It’s a good idea to contact your doctor's office directly to confirm their participation.

For those living in rural areas, checking your plan’s provider network is especially important. Access to nearby specialists can vary, so it’s worth ensuring you’ll have the coverage you need.

Stay Informed Every Year

Even if your plan hasn’t made significant changes, reviewing your coverage yearly is a smart move. Being aware of how your plan works—and how it compares to others—can help you make better decisions about your healthcare.
