Maximize Your Medicare- Free Wellness Services You Should Know About

As a Medicare beneficiary, it's important to understand the many services available to you at no cost. These services can help you maintain good health, without the burden of deductibles or coinsurance. Here’s a breakdown of three key services that you should take advantage of:

  1. Annual Wellness Exams: A Step Towards Better Health

Regular visits to your doctor can help catch health issues before they become serious. Medicare provides coverage for an initial "Welcome to Medicare Preventive Visit" within the first 12 months of enrolling in Part B. This visit includes a comprehensive checkup, such as measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, and a simple vision test. You’ll also receive screenings for depression and referrals for additional services.

Once your initial visit is completed, you’re eligible for annual wellness exams, which must occur at least 11 months after your previous visit. These exams are similar to your first visit but also allow your doctor to update your list of prescriptions and providers. While these visits come at no cost, be aware that additional tests or treatments outside the basic screenings may incur coinsurance costs. To avoid unexpected charges, inform your provider upfront if you prefer only covered services.

  1. Preventive Screenings: Early Detection is Key

Medicare doesn’t just cover wellness visits—it also covers a range of preventive screenings that can detect diseases early, when they’re easier to treat. Some of the most important screenings include tests for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, glaucoma, and mammograms. Cancer screenings, such as for lung, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancers, are also included in your coverage.

Additionally, Medicare provides annual bone density tests and screenings for obesity, along with counseling for weight loss if needed. Be sure to take full advantage of these services to protect your health.

  1. Immunizations and Vaccines: Protect Yourself at No Cost

Medicare offers free vaccines to help prevent illness, such as flu shots, pneumonia shots, and Hepatitis B shots. To access these vaccines and other services at no cost, make sure you visit a licensed doctor or Medicare-approved provider. Always verify that your caregiver accepts Medicare Assignment, meaning they agree to accept payment directly from Medicare and not charge you extra fees.

Taking advantage of these Medicare benefits is one of the best ways to ensure you stay healthy as you age. Don’t miss out on the free services available to you. Schedule your wellness exam today, and make sure you’re staying on top of all the preventive care that’s covered by Medicare.

If you haven’t already, book your Welcome to Medicare Preventive Visit or annual wellness exam today. Speak to your healthcare provider about your eligibility for free screenings and vaccines. Stay proactive in managing your health with Medicare!
